What is Biochar?

How is it obtained?

Biochar is a natural material with enormous potential for regenerative agriculture. It is obtained from plant residues (biomass) that are transformed through a controlled process called pyrolysis, in which the organic matter is heated to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen.

Biochar properties

The result is a stable, porous, and lightweight plant carbon, capable of retaining water and nutrients and hosting beneficial microorganisms within its structure. Unlike compost or manure, biochar does not decompose; instead, it remains active in the soil for centuries, helping to improve its structure and fertility over the long term.

Carbon sink

In addition to its agronomic benefits, biochar helps reduce the environmental footprint of agricultural activity. Biochar turns plant residues into a valuable resource that regenerates soils, improves crop efficiency, and contributes to climate sustainability.

Not all biochars are the same

Main factors that determine its quality, effectiveness, behavior, and benefits:

Raw material used

The type of source biomass (forest residues, agricultural residues, etc.) influences the composition of biochar. Each raw material provides different proportions of carbon, ash, minerals, and porosity.

Pyrolysis process conditions

The temperature, time, and absence of oxygen during production determine the internal structure and stability of biochar. Poorly processed biochar may contain volatile compounds or have an unsuitable pH, reducing its agronomic effectiveness.

Degree of activation

Raw biochar is biologically inactive. That’s why at ALERE Circular we apply an activation process through composting and controlled microbiology, which stabilizes the material and enhances its ability to retain water, nutrients, and host beneficial microorganisms.

Suitability for soil type and crop

here is no universal biochar. Its particle size, pH, and surface charge must be adapted to the characteristics of the soil (sandy, clayey, etc.) and the goals of the crop (fruit trees, vegetables, nurseries, etc.).
